Dog Training – What Works, and What Doesn't
Some dog training methods are based on what makes the OWNER feel good, rather than what on actually makes sense to the dog. For example, "positive-only" dog training is a big fad right now. Now, treats can be great motivators for training Brittany Spaniels, but if your dog will only obey for a treat, then HE is in charge of his obedience, not you. [read more]

Teach The Right Words In The Right Ways To Your Brittany Spaniel
My method of training Brittany Spaniels includes teaching specific words in specific ways so that your dog not only learns the words but also develops the respectful attitude that makes him happy to obey you. Teach your dog words and he will understand what you say. Teach those words in the right ways and he will actually DO what you say. [read more]

- In the home, teach 'no' and be loving to your pup. Teach it manners. House manners generally won't affect field learning unless you are too harsh. ALL pups must learn their place in your pack ! Dogs are not people and retain their wild 'pack order' instincts. If your pup is doing things it shouldn't, it's because you, the pack leader, are allowing it!

- Take your pup afield in cover that is consistent with his size. An 8 to 12 week old pup will enjoy cover that is short and easy to traverse. I like cover that is less than half the pups size with no thorns or other unpleasant obstacles. Let pup explore without your interference (in a safe area). This means keep your mouth closed and whistle in pocket to let pup explore freely.

The Brittany is a breed of gun dog bred primarily for bird hunting. Although it is often referred to as a Spaniel , the breed's working characteristics are more akin to those of a pointer or setter. Brittanys were developed in the Brittany province of France between the 17th and 19th centuries, becoming officially recognized early in the 20th.

The Brittany was first recognized as a breed in 1907 when an orange and white male named "Boy" was registered in France. As a result, the first standards were outlined in the same year. America recognized the Brittany in 1931 and the breed was approved by the American Kennel Club in 1934. In 1982 the "Spaniel" was officially dropped from the name.
